Rebekah Marie Malloy is the spunkiest nurse you will ever meet. She is a daughter, sister, friend, fiancee, caregiver, and all-around inspiration. Born in Colorado, Beka spent the majority of her childhood living outside of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. At the age of eight, Beka's family moved to Northern Virginia where Beka graduated from Lake Braddock High School in 2002. She earned a nursing degree from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and soon after, moved to the Santa Ynez Valley in California where she works as a nurse.
At the beginning of 2009, Beka had been feeling fatigued and went to the doctor on January 20th, 2009. At 3:30pm that afternoon, Beka received a call from the doctor that something was terribly wrong. A normal white blood cell count is approximately 4,000 - 10,000 WBC. Beka's was 187,000. She was admitted to the hospital the next day for tests and to get the situation under control. The doctor's diagnosed Beka with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (or CML).
Beka spent the last year battling the disease. Ever the fighter, she even completed a half marathon with Team in Training in October. Much to the relief of her family and friends, Beka received word on January 15, 2010 that she was officially in remission!
For Beka's story about her fight with the disease you can check out: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/bekamalloy
While this is Beka's background, there really are no words to describe who Beka is and the impact she has made on those around her. The author of this biography has personally witnessed the girl eat a whole cupcake before realizing that the cupcake had a wrapper on it, which was by that point, in her digestive system. We encourage you to share your stories about Beka, encouraging words, etc. via comments on this page.
